Monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance (MGUS) is characterised by the presence of an abnormal protein in the blood that is produced by plasma cells. Plasma cells are cells in the bone marrow that normally produce antibodies to fight infection. The abnormal protein produced by the MGUS plasma cells is called either an M–protein or paraprotein.

MGUS stands for Monoclonal Gammopathy of Undetermined Significance, a condition characterized by the presence in the blood of an abnormal protein called monoclonal protein or M protein, for short. It is produced in bone marrow by plasma cells, a type of white blood cell.

Multiple myeloma is a type of blood cancer that affects plasma cells. In multiple myeloma, malignant plasma cells accumulate in bone marrow — the soft, spongy tissue at the center of your bones — crowding out the normal plasma cells that help fight infection. These malignant plasma cells then produce an abnormal antibody called M protein, which offers no benefit MGUS occurs in over 3 percent of the general Caucasian population over the age of 50 and is typically detected as an incidental finding when patients undergo a protein electrophoresis as part of an evaluation for a wide variety of clinical symptoms and disorders (eg, peripheral neuropathy, vasculitis, hemolytic anemia, skin rashes, hypercalcemia, or elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate). 2019-02-21 2018-01-18 2016-11-18 Se hela listan på mayoclinic.org BAKGRUND Monoklonal gammopati, ofta förkortat MGUS (monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance) är ingen sjukdom utan en riskmarkör.

(See also Overview of Plasma Cell Disorders.) In general, monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) occurs in more than 5% of people older than 70, but it does not cause significant health problems unless it progresses to myeloma or a related serious B-cell disorder. Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) is, in many ways, a unique hematologic entity. Unlike most hematologic conditions in which the diagnosis is intentional and credited to hematologists, the discovery of MGUS is most often incidental and made by nonhematologists. In monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), blood samples contain abnormal proteins called monoclonal proteins, or M proteins. Plasma cells in the bone marrow (the soft substance at the center of bones) produce M proteins. Diagnosis. Because MGUS usually causes no symptoms, it's usually detected by chance during blood tests for other conditions.
